THE INSTITUTION
Celebrating its 175th year, Mercer is one of the premier universities in the nation. Guided by the historic principles of religious and intellectual freedom, the University successfully combines the intimate environment and personal attention traditionally found in a small college setting with the rigorous academic offerings and numerous resources of an excellent doctoral-level professional and graduate university.
With 7,300 undergraduate, graduate and professional students, the University has campuses in Macon and Atlanta and academic centers or programs in Douglas County, Henry County, Eastman, Savannah and Warner Robins, Georgia. Other University units include an engineering research center, a university press, a performing arts center and a NCAA Division I athletic program.
William D. Underwood, an accomplished educator and legal scholar, who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Law, has served as the University’s 18th president since 2006. Under his leadership, Mercer continues to expand its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as its national reputation.
The University is recognized widely for its academic excellence. For 18 consecutive years, U. S. News & World Report has ranked Mercer among the leading universities in the South. For the fifth consecutive year, The Princeton Review has listed Mercer in its popular college guide Best 366 Colleges. The Princeton Review’s 2008 edition of Best 290 Business Schools, which includes both the Macon and Atlanta programs, ranks Mercer’s Atlanta MBA program No. 1 in the category of “Greatest Opportunity for Women.” More than 90 percent of Mercer students surveyed in the National Survey of Student Engagement indicated their experience to be “good or excellent.”
Fundraising is a priority for all educational institutions, and Mercer receives strong support from its many constituencies. Nearing completion of its $350-million capital campaign, the University has an endowment in excess of $200 million, with another $100 million pledged through planned and estate gifts.
Mercer’s Macon campus is home to the College of Liberal Arts, the Stetson School of Business and Economics, the School of Engineering, the Tift College of Education, the Townsend School of Music, the School of Medicine, and the Walter F. George School of Law. In Atlanta, The Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus is home to the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the McAfee School of Theology, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing and the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. In addition, the Atlanta campus houses programs of the Stetson School of Business and Economics and the Tift College of Education.
Just 84 miles south of Atlanta on Interstate 75, Macon is the cultural, educational and healthcare hub of central Georgia. The Macon-Warner Robins area has a combined population of 375,000 and is home to eight institutions of higher learning. Savannah and the Georgia coast are three hours to the east, and the Appalachian Mountains are three hours north. Macon supports a symphony orchestra and The Grand Opera House, Mercer’s performing arts center.
Mercer University’s beautiful Atlanta campus is situated on 400 park-like acres in northeast Atlanta, conveniently just off I-85 and I-285 in Atlanta’s growing north side. Atlanta has 13 Fortune 500 and 24 Fortune 1000 headquarters and is often referred to as the ‘poster child for growing cities worldwide as the city of international influence’. The city is home to one of the world’s busiest airports, major league sports teams in baseball, football, basketball and hockey, and world-class entertainment.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics is well positioned to become a nationally prominent business school and seeks a dean who can help accomplish that goal. The Dean administers the second largest of Mercer’s 11 schools and colleges and reports directly to the Provost. As the School’s senior administrator, the Dean oversees the budget and curriculum, recommends faculty appointments, and has a significant role in fundraising activities. Two Associate Deans, who manage the Macon and Atlanta programs, report to the Dean.
Core Values
Established in 1984 and named in honor of Mercer alumnus and prominent banker Eugene W. Stetson, the Business School is committed to teaching excellence. The faculty is dedicated to scholarship and values civic responsibility and service-learning, understanding that each enhances an engaged learning environment and fosters ethical decision-making and intellectual curiosity.
The Faculty
The Business School employs 36 full-time faculty members, eight adjuncts, and a support staff of eight. Fifty-two percent of the full-time faculty are tenured; more than two-thirds have terminal degrees. Most have made significant intellectual contributions to peer reviewed journals within the past five years.
Students and Programs
Mercer attracts academically talented students from across the nation, and has alumni in all 50 states. With over 725 undergraduate students, the School offers a traditional day, a weekend and an evening BBA. The evening and weekend programs are designed especially for working students.
The Macon BBA degree program provides an interdisciplinary approach to business education, called Managed Academic Path to Success. MAPS is an individualized program of study, with a strong focus on internships and study abroad experiences, that enables students to graduate with a degree designed to meet their needs.
With over 425 graduate students, the School offers the MBA degree, an Executive MBA program that emphasizes the global business arena, and a Professional MBA program.
Resources and Accreditation
Exceptional academic facilities house the Business School in both Macon and Atlanta. Both buildings have a Dean’s suite, conference rooms, executive-style classrooms and state-of-the-art teaching technology.
The Business School has five endowed chairs, two endowed professorships, 12 endowed scholarships and an endowed Faculty Research and Development Fund. A high priority of the University’s ongoing fundraising goal is to increase endowed chairs and scholarships.
For 28 years, Mercer’s Executive Forum has been Georgia’s premier business enrichment program, providing the Business School an outstanding opportunity to network with business and community leaders. This year, the Forum hosted speakers such as General Electric Company Vice Chairman John G. Rice and political analysts James Carville and Mary Matalin.
The School of Business is accredited by the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools and AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
