OPPORTUNITY PROFILE
Tusculum College
President
THE INSTITUTION
Tusculum College has a rich heritage. Founded in 1794, it is the oldest college in Tennessee, the oldest coeducational institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the twenty-eighth oldest college in the nation.
Tusculum is one of only three colleges in the country that utilizes a focused calendar, or a block plan. Students are immersed in one course of study for approximately four weeks.
At Tusculum College, the term Civic Arts replaces “liberal arts” and renews its meaning as it was used by Cicero, the Roman orator, philosopher, statesman, and educator from whose villa Tusculum College takes its name. Tusculum defines educational progress as the success of its students, the personal growth of staff members, and tangible improvement in the quality of life in communities served by the College.
Service learning is an integral part of the curriculum, and many courses include service components. Moreover, as part of the Commons, or core curriculum, all students have the opportunity to get practical experience outside the classroom and a chance to serve the community. Students acquire valuable skills in leadership, collective decision making, communication, working in groups, and public problem-solving.
In the early 1990’s and after an extensive study, the College adopted the block plan, wherein the students take only one course at a time. This plan is immensely popular with students and is cited by most as a significant reason why they chose Tusculum. In meeting with current students, many who have been there for three years, support for the program is overwhelming. The faculty is also convinced of its efficacy.
The 140 acre-campus, nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, is home to nine buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places along with the historic Tusculum Arch. The main campus is located within the city of Tusculum, contiguous to the city of Greeneville, both in Greene County (population 65,000+). The College also owns a new building in Knoxville, which houses its Graduate and Professional Studies Program. It also provides educational programs at several other locations across East Tennessee.
The Tusculum Pioneers compete in the South Atlantic Conference of the NCAA Division II and field 14 varsity sports teams, including: Baseball, Football, Softball, Volleyball, and Men's and Women's teams for Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, and Tennis. Tusculum also offers eight intramural sports tournaments during the academic year.
The College is home to over twenty student clubs, including the Student Government Association (SGA), The Andrew Johnson Society for debate, and WTPL, the campus radio station. Students may choose among ten residence halls.
Carnegie Foundation has selected Tusculum College as one of thirteen model institutions for educational programs that encourage effective citizenship. Others include Duke University, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Emory University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. The College is also listed in the Templeton Foundation's Guide to Character Building Colleges. The residential college within Tusculum is further accredited by the American Academy for Liberal Education, which accredits outstanding liberal arts institutions or programs.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Tusculum College offers an unusual opportunity for a competent and ambitious academic leader who recognizes and appreciates the distinctiveness of the College with its innovative curriculum, rich tradition, and Sunbelt location near Interstate Highway 81 in thriving East Tennessee. There is much challenging work to be done and the potential to build an outstanding Civic Arts institution is real and attainable.
The President is appointed by and reports to the Board of Trustees. The Board is self-perpetuating and normally meets in February, May, and October. The College has an annual budget of $35 million with approximately 120 full-time faculty and staff members, plus 85 part-time adjunct faculty members. Total enrollment is 3,000 students, 800 in the traditional College and 2200 in the Graduate and Professional Studies program. The Board of Trustees is committed to the Mission of the College and stands ready to provide support.
Goals for the new President are:
- Engender a strong sense of community among students and faculty throughout the College to actualize the dream of a college experience.
- Implement a productive strategy for endowment, capital, and programmatic funding, to include a capital campaign for a new Science building and renovation of existing facilities.
- Increase enrollment in the traditional College to 1000 through improved retention. Increase enrollment in the Graduate and Professional Studies program up to 2500, while raising the bar on admission requirements for both programs.
- Enhance the academic rigor of the College.
- Unify the Civic Arts program with the Graduate and Professional Studies programs.
- Create a more equitable balance between athletics and academics.
- Broaden academic offerings to meet the evolving employment opportunities in the region, country and world.
The current senior staff includes the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid, the Interim Director of Athletics, the Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and the Vice President for Student Affairs.
THE CANDIDATE
Tusculum College seeks an intellectual leader who will passionately embrace and articulate the modern mission of the College. This story should be told in the context of the rich history and tradition of the College as it has become intertwined with its Graduate and Professional Studies program. The President must be compelling, creative, energetic, and entrepreneurial with a reputation for using exceptional wisdom to effect positive change.
Successful and significant experience in fund raising, including a major capital campaign, is essential. Time should be carefully balanced between internal and external affairs, assuring that the President is clearly perceived as a consummate administrator/leader, a civic intellectual, and adept in developing resources for the College.
Overall success will hinge upon refined interpersonal skills (particularly the ability to communicate effectively with groups and individuals), depth of experience, and the mental toughness to make good decisions while guiding the College through challenging times. Candidates must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the budgeting process and all financial affairs of the College to assure the ongoing stability of the institution.
Candidates must have significant experience as a successful senior administrator, preferably at the presidential level. Impeccable integrity, morality, trustworthiness, sensitivity to human dignity, and well balanced self-esteem are imperative. The President must be even handed, collaborative, and open to considering the views of others, yet decisive.
The President must be committed to the constant improvement of student life on campus and in the Graduate and Professional Centers. The President should provide leadership in developing a stronger sense of community among all students. An equal dedication to the recruitment of higher profile students is necessary.
The President will successfully foster faculty and staff development. A sincere respect for academic freedom and a commitment to high quality academic programming is expected.
